Research Areas

Areas we study.

Select a condition to learn more. This is general information, not a specific study.

Taking part in research is always voluntary. Expressing interest does not enrol you in a study and does not guarantee eligibility. Specific study details are shared only through materials approved by the study sponsor and a research ethics board.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What is a clinical research study?

A clinical research study is research led by a study doctor and their team to evaluate how safe and effective an investigational medication, device, procedure, or other health intervention is. "Investigational" means it is still being studied and may not yet be approved for general use in Canada.

Why are clinical research studies done?

Studies help answer how well a treatment works and how safe it is — often by comparing it to a placebo, to an approved treatment, or across different doses. What is learned can support approval of a new option or teach us more about treatments already in use.

Who can take part?

Taking part is always voluntary, and not everyone who is interested will be eligible. Each study has its own criteria — such as age, medical history, and condition — set by the sponsor and approved by a research ethics board, to keep participants safe and the results reliable.

What are the potential benefits of taking part?

People take part for different reasons: to access an investigational option that may not otherwise be available, to learn more about their condition and receive additional study-related attention from our team, and to contribute to knowledge that may help others in the future.

Is there a cost to take part?

There is no cost to express interest. If you join a specific study, study-related visits, assessments, and any study medication are typically provided at no cost to you — the research team explains the details before you decide.

Will research affect my regular care?

No. Taking part in research is separate from the care you receive from your family doctor and does not replace it. Your routine care continues as usual.

Can I change my mind after joining?

Yes. Participation is always voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time, for any reason, without affecting your regular medical care.

How is my privacy protected?

Your information is handled confidentially and in accordance with Ontario's Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA). Expressing interest does not share your details with any sponsor; study-specific information is governed by an approved consent form.
